Glossary of packaging technology

Full wrap

Products packaged in full wrap are completely enclosed in film. All sides of the product are protected by film.

Banderole

When packaging with a banderole, unlike full wrap, the product is not completely enclosed in film. The sides — i.e., the outer edges — remain open and are not covered by film.

Overlap sealing / ionization

In overlap sealing, the film is overlapped on the underside of the product using a form shoulder and then sealed or ionized. This is a very resource-efficient packaging method, as it produces no residual film waste.

Side sealing machine

A side sealing machine, as the name suggests, has only one side sealing unit along with the obligatory cross sealing unit. By using half-fold film, the product packaged in full wrap then has seals on only three sides.

Dual-side sealing machine

This type of machine has two side sealing units and one cross sealing unit. The system operates with two rolls of flat film and packages products in full wrap into exactly rectangular film pouches. This pouch has 4 seals.

Form-shoulder machine

With a form-shoulder machine, the film is guided over a so-called form shoulder, which then creates an overlap of the film ends on the underside of the products.

Banderoling machine

With banderoling, flat film is used to package products as individual items or as multipacks (bundling machine). Several identical products are combined into a multipack and packaged as a unit or product bundle. Often used for secondary packaging in retail.

Shrink tunnel

When products packaged in film are transported through a shrink tunnel, the heat inside the tunnel causes the film to shrink. This makes the film cling tightly to the product, creating shrink packaging.

Film packaging

This flexible packaging solution serves many functions. Among other things, the film protects products from moisture, dirt, and damage during transport or storage. Film packaging is also used as presentation or display packaging, putting products in the spotlight at the point of sale.

Paper packaging

Kallfass packaging machines do not only package in film, but also in paper. In this case, the paper provides protective function for the products.

Kallfass Wrap®

This packaging was developed by Kallfass for fresh food products and registered as a trademark. It packages perishable foods such as fish, cheese, sausages, and meat products in a tray made from renewable raw materials, using a barrier film. A protective gas atmosphere (MAP) can optionally be added. In this plastic-reduced packaging, the film completely envelops the product (full wrap!). The seals are airtight, so that no air can enter and no protective gas can escape.

Protective atmosphere packaging (MAP)

Protective atmosphere packaging (MAP – Modified Atmosphere Packaging) extends the shelf life of food products. This requires a hermetically sealed package with airtight seals and a barrier film. The protective gas introduced cannot escape, and oxygen cannot enter.

Flat film

Flat films are manufactured and offered on the market in various thicknesses and widths. The thin plastic film is wound onto a roll and is ideally suited for packaging products.

Half-fold film

Half-fold films are available in various thicknesses and widths. However, before being wound onto a roll, they are folded once. The U-shape allows for easy handling and versatile applications.

FAQ

What product portfolio does Kallfass offer?

Kallfass offers a very comprehensive machine program, which, in addition to horizontal film wrapping machines, also includes shrink tunnels as well as a large selection of components such as gripper feeders, conveyor belts, feeding systems, stacking stations, film folding devices, and many more components.

Can Kallfass packaging machines also pack in paper?

Kallfass also offers packaging machines for packaging in paper. Dedicated systems have been developed for this purpose. Two classic applications are available: for products in e-commerce for the shipping and returns sector, and the application in which products are packaged in shapely paper bags. In both applications, the paper used can be disposed of as waste paper within the existing recycling loop and thus retained, which benefits the environment.

Does my product work if it has a very special, irregular shape?

Of course it's possible! Our packaging machines can handle almost any product shape. From small and lightweight products to large products, everything is packaged safely and professionally.

Why are Kallfass packaging machines often high-priced?

This has to do with a compelling cost of ownership. The stable, virtually indestructible construction, ease of maintenance, wear resistance, and accessibility all contribute to this. Kallfass packaging machines bring perfect packaging results and maximum cost-effectiveness together.
