Behind these two terms lies a new sustainable alternative for packaging fresh food sold at supermarket fresh food counters. The lofty goal of the new packaging is to significantly reduce the amount of plastic used in fresh food counters, protect food perfectly and, at the same time, keep the packaging materials used in the recycling cycle after use.
In this case, ‘WRAP’ stands for ‘Waste Reduction Alternative Package’ and refers to alternative packaging that significantly reduces waste – both packaging and food waste. The term ‘REASY’ is associated with the concepts of ‘recyclable, environment, alternative, sustainable and easy’ and evokes a simple alternative for packaging food sustainably and environmentally friendly with 100% recyclable materials.
The clever mix of materials reduces food waste and
at the same time increases the recycling rates of the recyclable materials used
KALLFASS-WRAP® and REASY-PACK® already reduce the plastic content of packaging enormously, simply by using a tray made from renewable raw materials. The carbon footprint is further reduced when the conventional lid film – a multi-layer composite material that can only be thermally recycled – is replaced by a barrier film with 20 or 30µ. The barrier film, a mono-material, separates completely from the tray when the packaging is opened and can thus be sorted and recycled.
‘We have further developed our equipment and processes and are now close to market launch,’ says Jens Kallfass. ‘Our new process enables the food industry to package food for the fresh food counter more flexibly and quickly. At the same time, around 90% of plastic can be saved, which is a win-win-win situation for manufacturers, consumers and the environment.’
