‘The UN agreement on plastic waste has failed,’ was the news that could be read everywhere in mid-August 2025. In Geneva, around 180 countries were unable to agree on a far-reaching treaty to curb plastic pollution worldwide. A bitter setback for the environment and nature. The European Union is already one step ahead. The PPWR Regulation (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) came into force in Europe in February 2025. This PPWR is a central component of the EU's Green Deal strategy, which aims to ensure that packaging is not only functional but also sustainable and resource-efficient in the future.

And Kallfass? With its new Kallfass-Wrap® packaging, Kallfass already offers the food industry a way to meet and comply with the requirements of the PPWR. ‘Anyone who wants to can already do a lot to achieve the goals of the PPWR. Not only in Europe, but worldwide,’ says Jens Kallfass, CEO of Kallfass Verpackungsmaschinen GmbH. ‘The potential to significantly reduce plastics in packaging is there; it just needs to be utilised and applied. The trays used, made from renewable or recycled raw materials and a thin barrier film, are recyclable materials that can be kept in the recycling cycle,’ the CEO continues.

is already helping to avoid plastic waste
‘We have long wanted to make food packaging, such as the plastic packaging used for sausage, cheese, meat, fish and other foods, more sustainable and environmentally friendly,’ says Jens Kallfass. ‘But first we had to do our homework, create the technical conditions for this and modify our machines to produce airtight packaging,’ the CEO continues. ‘Now, thanks to our new sustainable packaging, we are enabling the food industry to package goods in such a way that plastics can be largely dispensed with. With our expertise, we are standing shoulder to shoulder with the food industry,’ adds Jens Kallfass.
